The Half of It
The perfect film to trick someone into watching, especially if they’re homophobic, because the gay part of the movie comes towards the end. Also genuinely a great movie about teen Ellie Chu, who agrees to write a love letter for a jock to his crush. Grab some popcorn and a few tissues!
Boy Erased
This movie, a true story about the son of a Baptist preacher who unwillingly participates in a church-supported gay conversion program after being forcibly outed to his parents, shows in great detail the disgusting practice that is conversion therapy. We hope it convinces your family or friends that your identity is not something that can be ‘‘cured’’.
The Danish Girl
Loosely based on the life of the first recipient of gender reassignment surgery, Lili Elbe, this fictitious love story may be a good way to introduce trans issues. We admit that while it may be problematic movie, unfortunately it is still one of the most positive portrayals of transgender people in cinema. Most of the rest revolve around the premise of trans people being serial killers. Sigh.
But I’m a Cheerleader
Think Boy Erased, but a comedy. The plot is about a naive teenager who is put into rehab camp by her straitlaced parents and friends who suspect she’s a lesbian. A good movie to engage the entire family, including your siblings, while also educating them on gay issues.
We understand how difficult coming out can be. We hope these movies help you have that conversation with your people. Regardless of how they react, we want you to remember that we’re here for you. Hope you had a great pride month!
